Why does my search result turn RED or get a pop-up dialog when I try to download a file?

Please see the next question.

Does Morpheus filter out copyrighted files from being downloaded?

While some files you find with Morpheus are free and authorized for download, some files are not. When you click to download a file that might not be authorized for free downloading, you might be directed to a website, such as amazon.com or buy.com, where you might be able to sample and/or purchase or license the file from or through that web-site. After you click one of these files, it will appear red in the search results. The red mark will remain for the current session only. These pop-ups are temporary. We anticipate that in the near future content that is not yet authorized for downloading will be authorized by the copyright holders for downloading either for free, as a piece of sponsored or promotional content, or for purchase or licensing. While the database and accuracy for determining whether files are not authorized by copyright holders for free downloading is improving, Morpheus disclaims any warranty about any part of this process. See, also Disclaimer of Warranties Limitation of Liabilities, Governing Law (http://www.morpheus.com/notices.asp).

What the is wrong with Morpheus?

There is a new Morpheus™ on its way. We are preparing to provide more tools than ever before for our users to discover, share, and enjoy the world’s largest collection of media and the ability to connect with new friends locally or globally. Here are some of the features currently being planned for the new Morpheus v6 featuring “Social Media.”

  • FREE‡ music and videos for downloading and sharing, authorized by the creators so there will be NO THREAT OF LAWSUITS to users, including a new showcase for indie music, films & videos that you won’t find on FM radio or TV
  • Instant uploading & sharing of your own user generated content to your friends or the world – through Morpheus or to your favorite social networking sites – AND NO LIMITS to the number or size of your files!
  • The return of our social networking functions to make it easy to discover and connect with other users that like what you like

TO MAKE THIS CHANGE, WE HAVE AGREED TO THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY’S REQUEST TO FILTER OUT CONTENT THAT IS NOT AUTHORIZED BY THEM FOR SHARING:

While our filtering efforts still are not fail-proof (http://www.morpheus.com/notices.asp), you should not be able to download the files that appear red when clicked in your search results as this indicates that these files have not yet been authorized for downloading.

Our goal is to replace these unauthorized files with authorized files that you can download and share with other Morpheus users with the consent of the copyright holders. So please bear with us during this transition so we can make this dream a reality very soon for everyone.

In the meantime, there are still plenty of files authorized by the creator for downloading and sharing‡  (http://www.morpheus.com/notices.asp). We are featuring some of the better ones on the Morpheus Online tab in your client. Morpheus Online is the place where you will find all the new changes as they become available. Don’t forget to visit Morpheus Forums where you can find the latest news on what’s happening here at Morpheus.

Morpheus is using too much of my bandwidth or memory, what can I do?

Morpheus on most computers will work fine by default while connected to various file sharing networks. If you're consuming too much bandwidth or memory it's recommended you adjust bandwidth and Network settings to accomodate your connection speed should you have problems using Morpheus in default mode.

To set your bandwidth limits, navigate to Preferences > File Transfers section.
To change your network settings navigate to Preferences > P2P Networks section. You can enable or disable G2 network as well as force yourself to 'leaf' mode which applies to Gnutella and G2 settings which will reduce memory and bandwidth usage if you have any problems using Morpheus in Automatic mode.

When exiting Morpheus, what does the message box mean?

The dialog asks if you are sure you want to exit the application as shown in the image below. By keeping Morpheus open please be aware you make any files you are sharing available to others on the network and contribute equally in routing on the peer-to-peer network.

How do I enabled or disable Morpheus being my default media player?

Navigate to Preferences > Media and Web > Uncheck the option set to "Always play media files with Morpheus".

How do I uninstall Morpheus?

Navigate to your Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Locate the Morpheus uninstaller and simply run it to remove Morpheus. Please note that the uninstaller does not remove your downloaded or shared folders.

What are Ultrapeers and leafs?

On the Gnutella network, you are designated as an Ultrapeer or leaf, depending on your connection, CPU and RAM, uptime, and a few other factors. It's a scheme to have a hierarchical network by categorizing the nodes on the network as leaves and Ultrapeer for improved efficiency and scalability. Users labeled Ultrapeer capable on fast connections and computers are promoted to Ultrapeer if needed, whereas dial-up connections and slower computers remain shielded leafs. You can force yourself to a certain mode in Preferences, but it's recommended that you leave the default setting of 'automatic' set.

Connecting

I see no activity when I try to start Morpheus.

Make sure you have an Internet connection.

What if I cannot connect to any host?

Make sure you are connected to the Internet. Try Exiting and re-starting Morpheus.

How do I connect to the Network?

Morpheus will automatically connect to the network for you. Note that when you first launch the program, it may take moment for it to find suitable peers to connect to. Please be patient and allow Morpheus to connect to your peers. If using a firewall, make sure Morpheus has permission to access the internet.

How do I disconnect from the Network?

Upon exiting Morpheus, you will be disconnected from the network. If you wish to disconnect from the Network, but keep Morpheus open, simply right click on the Morpheus icon in the system tray, and select Disconnect.

I use a firewall or router, can I still use Morpheus?

Morpheus will work through your hardware and software firewalls, although it varies from firewall to firewall set up. If you are using a software firewall such as McAfee or Zone Alarm be sure Morpheus has access to connect to the internet and act as a server. If you use a router (common for DSL and cable connections) and want to increase your download and connect success, it's highly recommended you forward the port Morpheus is using to your local computer. You can set the port Morphues uses in Preferences > Internet Connection > 'set incoming Gnutella port to' . Please visit our Firewall How-To for proper router configuration when using Morpheus.

Searching

What if the file I am searching for is not here?

If you are unable to get any search results, try putting in a more generic definition (e.g. 'games').

SHARE RESPONSIBLY: Using Morpheus™ or Morpheus Ultra™ for the uploading or downloading of copyrighted works without the permission or authorization of the copyright holders may be illegal and could subject you (or the ISP subscriber) to civil and/or criminal liability and penalties. For more information about U.S. copyright law, please visit http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/ and http://www.copyright.gov/title17.¥

How do I stop a search?

Stop searches by clicking the "X" on the search item in the flyout tab. You can also view more results, more stuff, close the search and close all searches in this operation.

Can I save my search?

At this time, Morpheus does not have this functionality. You can only save downloaded files.

I downloaded a file, but I don't know what type of file it is?

You can find out what any file type is with the help of this website. http://www.filext.com/

How do I get the most out of my search?

Break the name of the file you are looking for into keywords that you are sure of. Do not use asterisks, wild cards, dashes, commas, or dots. Just use keywords. If the file you were looking for was called 'party at john's house-1998.mpg', search for 'party john house 1998 mpg'. Don't use quotes either. Using this search method should maximize the effectiveness of your search.

How do I narrow down my search results?

You can narrow your search results by entering specific information you want to display in the name filed on the search results. This will hide any files that do not match your narrow criteria. For instance, if you searched using Morpheus as your key word, you can narrow your search results by specifying morph2. Your search results will display only files with morph2 in the file name.

Image:Faq-search-01.gif

What does the 'host' column in the search results mean?

By default search results are sorted by the distribution of the file, which lists how many available hosts were found to be sharing the identical file. If you are firewalled, firewalled hosts will not be displayed. The more hosts, the higher success rate you will have in downloading. Morpheus is able to download partial files from multiple sources and even begin a transfer from someone in the process of getting the file themselves, allowing downloading with Morpheus to surpass its competition in performance and success rate.

How does Morpheus re-search?

When a new connection is made, Morpheus will send pending re-search queries over this new connection once. Morpheus does not support saturating the network for query matches. This first method proves to be the most effective.

How many simultaneous searches can I perform?

As many as you like! Each search query can yield virtually unlimited search results. While many other file sharing programs do not support simultaneous searches or can limit search results, Morpheus provides you with the most flexibility when conducting searches.

Downloading

Do Not Infringe Copyright

SHARE RESPONSIBLY: Using Morpheus™ or Morpheus Ultra™ for the uploading or downloading of copyrighted works without the permission or authorization of the copyright holders may be illegal and could subject you (or the ISP subscriber) to civil and/or criminal liability and penalties. Why can’t I download all the files that I search for in Morpheus?

What factors are affecting my download speeds?

Morpheus has no centralized server of any kind. Because its users connect to other users, we can't guarantee that your speeds will be fast all the time. Your download and upload speed depends on your connection and the other person's connection. For instance, if you are a broadband user and you are downloading something from a dial-up user, your download speed will be limited to the speed of the dial-up modem. If you are a dial-up modem user and are downloading from a broadband user, your speeds will constantly be high, but you still can only download at your modem's maximum speed.

Why is my download slow? What can I do?

Morpheus relies on your Internet connection and that of your peers. As a rule, the faster the better. If you are on a slower connection such as a dial-up then your overall speeds will naturally be slower. Alternatively just because you are on a high-speed connection, doesn't mean everything you download will be fast. Speeds and download success may vary due to multiple factors including being firewalled and wXP SP2 half-connection limits.
If you are having problems with many of your downloads simply not transferring, here are some tips that may help:
• Any transfers that have not completed within a day and seem to be going through many hosts with no success, cancel it and re-search for this file to start anew.
• If firewalled, setting up port forwarding if you're firewalled would dramatically help. See the firewall section for help.
• If you have any BitTorrent transfers, try stopping them and restart Morpheus and see if the other transfers have any luck.

Am I limited to a certain number of uploads/downloads at the same time?

No, you are not. You have the option to set the number of simultaneous uploads and downloads. Go to Preferences>File Transfer>File Transfer Properties and set your preferences.

Is there a way to pause my other transfers while I am doing a big download?

From the Transfers pane, select the downloads you want to pause and use the 'pause' option in the right-click menu. Additionally, you can go to Preferences > File Transfers and adjust your bandwidth and transfer settings.

What folder do my files go into once they've downloaded?

By default, they go into into My Documents\Morpheus Shared\Downloads

How do I get Morpheus to start downloads?

In order to download files in your search results, simply double-click on the files you wish to download. This will automatically start your download (depending on your maximum simultaneous downloads, found in Preferences > File Tranfer). To start downloading a file that has a "Pending" status, simply right click on the file and select "Get More Hosts". Your download will then begin.

Why does some media have fewer hosts?

The number of hosts a single file has is solely dependent on how many users are currently sharing that file across the Morpheus network. In order for a file to have multiple hosts, it needs to have the same exact file name and file size on each individual host.

Why do my files keep starting over or failing hash verification?

The Gnutella network has a wealth of data to be shared and a collection of different clients. Sometimes clients send altered or bad data in multi-source downloads causing the file to be slightly altered. Although likely functional, it will cause it to fail the 'expected' hash value. Morpheus uses advanced TigerTree hashing technology to ensure that any partially downloaded files are not altered in the process of downloading chunks, so this should become a less common occurrence as more Morpheus users populate the network.

How do I avoid getting incomplete files in general?

When possible download the file that has the most hosts in the distribution column of the search tab. This number represents how many users have the exact same file; increasing the chances of a successful download as well as ensuring it's likely a legitimate file since many peers are sharing it.

Does Morpheus resume files?

Yes. Once you begin a download, there is no need to worry about it and you can close that search results tab. Morpheus' download manager will automatically search the network for the file and when one is found, resume the download. Additionally, if you close Morpheus, the file will attempt to resume when you next start the program.

Sharing and Transfering

Do Not Infringe Copyright

SHARE RESPONSIBLY: Using Morpheus™ or Morpheus Ultra™ for the uploading or downloading of copyrighted works without the permission or authorization of the copyright holders may be illegal and could subject you (or the ISP subscriber) to civil and/or criminal liability and penalties. For more information about U.S. copyright law, please visit http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/ and http://www.copyright.gov/title17.¥

Can other peers obtain files I am currently downloading?

When a file download is in progress, it’s considered as a partial file and those parts already downloaded and in the process of being downloaded will be shared with other users. Partial files are shared as part of the download mesh that is a standard feature of P2P software and a technological advantage of file-sharing applications.

How do I manage my shared/download folders?

Managing your folders is easy! At the top of your screen, go to Preferences > Folders and from there you can add or remove shared folders, as well as designate where you want your downloads go.

What if I no longer want to share my files or downloaded files?

Go to Preferences > Folders as stated in the question above. Files downloaded using Morpheus are automatically placed in the shared folder. Please remove any folders or files listed in your Shared Folder directory that you do not want to share.

Will my Morpheus Ultra experience be affected by the number of files I share?

Yes, the more shared files available, the better everyone’s experience will be!

How do I submit my own songs, games, etc?

Simply put them in your share folder. To find your shared folder, look in Preferences > Folders and follow the path or add a new folder.

How Do I share additional folders?

Click on Preferences > Folders. There you can specify which folders you want to share with the network. Click the Add button in order to locate other folders that are not already listed, or highlight a folder from the list and click the Remove Button if you no longer want to share it.

Where do I check the status of my downloads/transfers?

By clicking the Traffic Tab, you will be taken to the downloads and uploads section of Morpheus where you will see the status of your transfers. Note that completed downloads will automatically appear in the My Files tab.

Image:Faq-sharing-01.gif

Where is the default 'Downloads' folder located?

The path to the 'Downloads' folder is: My Documents\Morpheus Shared\Downloads. Morpheus also places a shortcut to this location on the Desktop after installation.

Why aren't my files sharing properly? I never see any uploads?

The 'Uploads' section of Transfer currently doesn't save your completed uploads, and they are cleared from the screen when completed; it will only show uploads actively in progress. Additionally, if you're behind a firewall, note that other firewalled users cannot download a file from you unless you have UPnP functionality activated. To activate UPnP, go to Preferences > Internet Connection and check the box for Try to use UPnP (if firewalled)

Image:Faq-sharing-02.gif

Firewall

I use a firewall or router, what can I do?

It has become common for a typical household using broadband to utilize a router or some type of firewall. If you're behind a router or other type of firewall you can still use Morpheus, but you will not be able to download from other firewalled users and connecting can be slower if you are not properly configured. This will be most evident when downloading and not being able to take advantage of every host available for a particular file, because two firewalled users cannot download directly from one another. Please read on.

How do I know if Morpheus is firewalled?

In the bottom left corner of Morpheus there you will see a network status area. Once passed the connecting state and connected, the status will either read 'Connected' or 'Firewalled'.

  • If it reads 'Firewalled', you are connected but firewall. Read on below.
  • If it reads 'Connected', you are either not firewalled or already configured properly. For example us using a router it usually means Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) default settings have allowed Morpheus to properly map your ports; nice work!

You can ensure you get the most out of your peer-to-peer experience and improve your download success if you take just a few moments to properly configure your firewall/router along with Morpheus Internet Connection settings with the information provided in the sections below.

What about using a software firewall?

If using a software firewall such as Zone Alarm, McAfee or Norton the configuration needed is straight forward. Simply ensure that Morpheus has access to connect to the internet and act as a server when prompted by your firewall software, which usually is the case when any new application attempts to connect to the Internet.

  • Note: Morpheus automatically detects if Windows Firewall is blocking connection access and prompts you.

I want to improve performance and download speeds, what do I do?

There are two ways to allow Morpheus to work to its full potential behind a router firewall. The first method is to configure Morpheus and your router to use UPnP. This allows Morpheus to automatically open ports in your router. If this does not work you can manually open the ports Morpheus uses.

Note: If you are having internet connectivity problems when using Morpheus, it's recommended you disable the "G2" network from the Preferences > P2P Networks.

Configuring your router

In order to properly configure your router to work with Morpheus, use following directions below that corresponds with your routers manufacturer. Now navigate to the orange "Advanced" button and then finally to the Forwarding tab as shown below.

Image:Faq-firewall-01.gif

2) You should now be within your routers Port Forwarding configuration: enter a 2 port range to forward, specify your local IP, and click the enable checkbox as shown in the above example. Click apply to save your settings.

  • You can choose any consecutive 2 port range between below 65254 (i.e 5000 to 5001 or 18500 to 18501).
  • Not sure what your local IP is? To determine your local IP and gateway follow these simple directions:

a. Go to Start > Run . Type in "cmd" , then press enter. This will open a windows dos prompt
b. Within the dos command prompt, type in : "ipconfig" and press enter. You should see something like this:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

  • The IP Address is your local IP, this is the IP to use in your router configuration for port forwarding.
  • The Default Gateway, is the router's IP and you can connect to it's config panel by entering this IP into your browser address no matter which brand you use. e.g. http://192.168.1.1

3) Now we need to obtain your WAN IP (external IP) that you will need to enter into Morpheus's Preferences. Morpheus by default will detect this IP and be in a 'greyed' out state, however if configuring port forwarding you should determine it as follows:

While still in your Router Configuration Panel, navigate to "Setup" then to the "Status" tab. There, you'll want to record your WAN IP Address as shown below...

4) Now there is only one last step to complete the process! In Morpheus, apply these settings to Preferences > Internet Connection > 'Set incoming Gnutella port to' and 'Set reported IP to' settings, then click OK to apply these changes as shown below.

Local IP settings should match "WAN IP" recorded above is step #3 s & the incoming port should be the first port you choose above in step #1.

While Port forwarding can sometimes be difficult to configure with some routers, it still provides a safe way of running a servant from behind a firewall since only the ports you explicitly choose are exposed to the Internet. You will now enjoy increased download success and faster connecting, now that you're properly configured! Happy Sharing

My Files

How do I open downloads or files in My Files?

In the My Files Tab, double clicking a file will play it.

What functionality do I have in My Files?

You have all the basic Windows functionalities you're accustomed to and much more. Morpheus includes sorting of downloaded files by type, ability to select multiple files, 'shred' files, and create Magnet links.

Magnet links allow you to search, download, and share files using links on webpages. When you right click a file in My Files, you will see the option Magnet Link > Copy to clipboard and Magnet Link > Send via e-mail. Magnet links are usable by simply pasting them into any browser address bar to begin a search or download within Morpheus or, by creating a hyperlink of them on a webpage.

Shredding files allows you to permanently erase files when deleting them from your library by using a wipe algorithm; as opposed to simply sending it to the Recycle Bin where the file is still recoverable. To enable this option when deleting a file, go to Preferences > Folders and check the option Always wipe files when deleting. Please be careful with this option in deleting files, as they will not be recoverable.

Why do I get no sound playing mp3s?

If you get no sound when trying to play mp3s using Morpheus, you might need to update Windows Media Player. Get it Here (http://www.microsoft.com).

Why do I only get sound when playing a video?

If your video plays with sound only, and no picture, you will need the proper Codec. To determine what Codec your video file requires see the following answers.

I get player errors when trying to watch a movie or the movie doesn't play at all?

Player errors occur for only 2 reasons. 1. You're missing the proper Codec for your video file OR 2. The file is corrupt/no good. Always try installing the proper Codec first. To determine what Codec your movie file requires see the following answers.

How do I know what Codec I need?

Some common Codecs are: divx (div3/div4/opendivx) - are divx codecs and mp42/mp43- are Microsoft codecs. You can download and install an all in one package which covers most using the following links.

What is an .avi file and why can't I preview it?

.avi is a type of video file. You must wait for an .avi file to completely download before viewing it using windows media player.

Security

Who has access to my files?

Other users can only access what is in your shared folders and downloads or files in process of downloading in the form of partial files which is part of the technology in the peer-to-peer download system. You can view what folders you are sharing by going to Preferences > Folders. Monitor your shared folders to make sure nothing personal is being shared.

Is my system susceptible to viruses, spyware and Trojans? What can I do to prevent those risks?

Yes, we strongly recommend that you use the most updated virus scanning program whenever you download anything from the internet, especially from unknown sources.

Does Morpheus have spyware or bundles?

Morpheus does not contain or bundle malicious spyware of any kind. Morpheus has an optional Morpheus Toolbar that is offered at the time of post-installation. A user must opt-in to install the Morpheus Toolbar and it is not required for Morpheus to function.

After installing Morpheus, why do I have a new shortcut on my desktop not related to Morpheus?

Morpheus may occasionally place a single desktop icon during the installation. The desktop icon is only a shortcut to a website and NOT an installed application. To remove the shortcut, simply delete it from your desktop.
Note: Morpheus Ultra does not contain any ads, therefore does not drop the icon shortcut.

How can I block malicious hosts or maximize the use of my blacklist?

You can manually add IP addresses and IP address ranges from Preferences > Block section.

How can I find Public web proxies to use for the Morpheus Proxy option | What is a Proxy?

Proxy servers act as intermediaries between Internet users to protect their identities in activity on the internet. Click here to the search the web for free proxies you can add to your Preferences > Proxy list for anonymous downloading.

Do not use a proxy to attempt to avoid being pursued for illegaly downloading or uploading content not authorized by the copyright holder for free distribution.

Can I get a virus using Morpheus?

There is always a chance of getting a virus by downloading from an unknown source. You can minimize the chances of getting a malicious file by specifying the file type when you perform a search to limit the type of files you get to the proper extension. Morpheus uses advanced technology to ensure that any partially downloaded files are not altered in completing a file. Nonetheless, we recommend you use an up-to-date antivirus program and scan all downloaded files. You can eliminate this possibility by further configuring Morpheus to scan every completed download. Please refer to the next question.

How do I configure my virus scanner in Morpheus?

You can setup your virus scanner to auto-scan downloaded files. Navigate to the Preferences > Antivirus setting. Click on 'Add' and locate the directory your virus scanner to automatically scan every completed file you download to an added measure of security in keeping your computer safe. Please consult your virus scanner documentation for the directory of the .exe to scan files.

Below are some samples. Yours may be different even if you have the same software.

Samples command lines:

• McAfee: “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Network Associates\VirusScan Engine\4.0.xx\scan.exe” "C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\Agent\mcagent.exe"

• AVG: "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6\avgse.exe"

• Norton: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\NMain.exe" or

"C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\NAVW32.exe"

Where can I get an anti-virus program?

You can use a good anti-virus program such as AVG here (www.grisoft.com) or McAfee's which you can get here (www.mcafee.com).
