P2P LEGISLATION IN THE 109TH CONGRESS
Hollywood's and the Recording Industry's attempts to hold the members of P2P United liable for copyright infringement for designing and distributing decentralized peer to peer software are now before the Supreme Court. (Learn more at P2P United's "Litigation" page.) Senior sources inside the 109th Congress just convened in early 2005 report that, while these critical issues are still pending before the High Court, legislation dealing directly with peer to peer software and the issues raised in this landmark case is unlikely to be introduced. For the time being, these predictions have proven true.

Once the Supreme Court's ruling is delivered (most likely in June or July of 2005), however, a flurry of bills can be expected to be introduced rapidly. What they say will depend heavily on what the Court rules and how broad, or not, its opinion is. It's no exaggeration to say that ultimately the 109th Congress may well be the one to shape our digital future more profoundly than any other before it, and that public support for P2P United and its fight for the future of P2P technology will be more important than ever.

Temporary Congressional calm on the direct peer to peer front, however, doesn't mean that Congress has forgotten copyright issues completely. P2P United's positions on important bills in the last Congress have been archived here and a comprehensive listing of all pending copyright legislation is available by clicking here for the U.S. Copyright Office.
